Portfolio Proposal
My aim for this assignment is to show my skills and abilities of a music producer/remixer. I will show these skills by showing off different projects I’ve worked on and showing how they relate back to my chosen roll. My first chosen project is my recording and mixing project which shows my abilities of setting up and recording tracks as well as mixing them and using pro tools. My second will be my synthesis and sampling project which I show off my skills in using Ableton live as well as my skills of structuring a song and making use of both midi and audio tracks. My Third artefact I’ll be using is my own track I created which shows my skills of intuition when it comes to making a project by yourself and further showing my skills in Ableton live.
The planning stage of this assignment will consist of explanations of how these artefacts are relevant to my chosen role of remixer/producer. I will show my working in my production plan. I will also use a GANTT chart to work out the estimated timescale for these 3 projects.
The development stage will involve creating a website for my portfolio, outlining its contents and providing a summary of the units I have studied this year. I will include an introduction that explains the purpose of the portfolio and the relevance of each artefact to my chosen career path. My CV will also be featured, showcasing the skills and abilities I have gained from both my college studies and prior work experience. Additionally, I will include supporting materials for the artefacts, such as photos taken during the process, videos of my workflow, samples used, and a journal.
In the Evaluation stage, I will review my progress and compare it to my initial plan, highlighting areas where I adhered to the original plan and where things deviated. I will critically reflect on my work, noting what went well and what I would repeat, as well as identifying aspects that could have been improved and how I might approach them differently in the future.
Role Description
Music Producer / Remixer
Tasks and Responsibilities
The main tasks and responsibilities as a music producer would be to manage and direct recording sessions and budgets for Artists and Bands that hire you. Money is when receiving royalties from your created tracks when you sell them to artists to use in their own rights. Another part of this role is setting up collaborations with other producers and artists while also giving creative input. You are also in control of providing a clear direction and vision for artists and audio engineers for each project. As a producer it is also your responsibility to make sure every sample used is cleared and fully allowed to be used, making sure all contracts to do with artists or labels is also your responsibility. Lastly it is your job to handle mixing and mastering unless there is a specialised mixing and mastering engineer then you would guide them in the right direction.
Skills For This Role
The skills required to fulfil this role are very varied. Having some knowledge of music theory is required in order to create a track worth listening to. Another skill required to create a listenable song is to have intricate knowledge of the genres you’ll be working with, including standard tempos, track structuring and various techniques that are usually used to enhance the sounds within the project. Marketing is a big part of production as the effort you put in must be put to good use and reach the audience you desire. One of the biggest marketing tactics a producer can use in current times is to post their music all over social media such as TikTok and Instagram to gain the attention of people who have never even heard of you. Music producers must also be organised and able to delegate tasks efficiently to maximise work rate. The last main skill that a producer must have is being able to communicate well with others in the industry in order to maintain good relationships and to keep a good workflow when working with various different people.
Personality Traits
Key personality traits for a successful producer include patience, as the music industry often involves long waits whether it's for sample clearance, a label to release a track, or multiple takes to get the right sound. Patience is essential in managing these delays. Strong time management and planning skills are also important, as producers usually work under tight deadlines, and failing to meet them can cause delays in releases. Ambition is another valuable trait, as it drives producers in a highly competitive industry filled with creative individuals pursuing significant goals. Lastly, being cooperative is crucial, as producers frequently collaborate with artists, labels, engineers, and fellow producers.
Earnings
Most producers work on a freelance basis, meaning their career growth depends on their skills and reputation within the industry. Many start their journey by reaching out to artists online, sharing beats, or teaming up with other producers. There are also platforms like Beat Stars and Distrokid where producers can create an online store to sell their beats directly.
Progression Route (How to get foot in and is there any ways for promotion)
The Main progression route used nowadays for producers is to advertise themselves through social media as well as selling goods such as sample packs and services such as mixing and mastering.
Inspirations – Azyr, Oguz and Avicii
My first inspiration is Azyr whose real name is Oliver Rowley, a DJ and music producer from Manchester in England. His career only started in the last 5 years, but he has quickly risen to the top of the hard techno scene as a staple in the community. He has worked with some of the biggest names in the genre like Nico Moreno, BLK and many more. The reason he is such a big inspiration for me is because he is the first DJ I ever seen perform in this particular scene and I
seen how he played and it instantly made me want to start my journey into producing music. After I seen him in real life I went and checked out his music he produces, and I caught on right away that if I wanted to stand a chance in the industry I’d have to work hard on my craft.
My second inspiration is Oguz whose real name is Oguz Gulcenbay, a DJ and music producer from the Netherlands. His career began his career of producing in 2016 and started to DJ in 2017. He has worked with some massive names in the genre and a lot of smaller artists who he has seen potential in such as Nyctonian and Vieze Asbak. Working with these artists has led to the creation of some of his biggest songs like Golden SZN and FC Horsepower, collectively gathering over 3 million streams. Oguz has also played in some of the biggest venues and festivals in the world such as Tomorrowland and Verknipt Festival. The reason he is such an inspiration to me is the way he produces his music. His level of attention to detail in the sounds he creates is fascinating and the amount of effort he puts into each of the tracks in his music is inspiring. His style is using more of an industrial sounding beat with euphoric melodies which always sits well with a crowd. He is also the owner and founder of 808 Studios which is both and event planning company and a record label hosting massive songs by Oguz himself and various other artists such as Gravedgr and 6EJOU.
My third inspiration is Avicii whose real name is Tim Bergling, a DJ and Producer from Sweden. His career started in 2005 when he was just 16 and rose to fame in 2011 with his hit single Levels. He has worked with some of the biggest artists in the world such as David Guetta, Coldplay and Madonna to name a few. The reason he is such an inspiration to me is how naturally talented he was and how much passion he had for his work, also how much of his music I heard growing up as his career started in the same year I was born. His drive to become the best motivated him to be one of the most popular artists in the world for a long time and play at some of the biggest festivals of all time like Coachella and Creamfields.
Artefacts For Inclusion
Artefact 1 – Daw Synthesis and Sampling Project
I will use my Synthesis and Sampling Project from the assessment as an artifact for my graded unit. My learning from this unit shows both my ability to finish a project by a tight deadline and to finish it following strict parameters. My creative skills and proficiency in Ableton and other DAWs are showcased here by the intricacy of the composition and design of the track which I learned from this unit and the sound for multimedia project. Within this project I showed I am proficient with the DAWs digital instruments like synths and samplers by making sure I was within the guidelines set for me. These guidelines stated I had to include at least 2 synth patches, 1 sampler instrument, use of various effects and automation for different parameters and then 3 midi tracks and 3 audio tracks. That was the minimum, but I went above and beyond that including lots of different techniques. I also managed my files very well in this session which proves I have organisation skills in this topic. This is a very important part of a project because it creates a sense of simplicity in navigating the session and having everything needed in a safe place that has ease of access. The effects and processing I used in the track are impressive as every separate channel has its own effect chain exclusive to the sound of that track, cutting out unwanted frequencies with eq and glueing all the sounds from the same instruments together with reverb and compression. Lastly, I balanced the mix at a professional level, some of the mixing was done in class and some of it at home after. This project contains a sample from the song “F*ck Sum” by Ye and Ty Dolla Sign which I do not have clearance to use as I learned in my skills for business unit, I would need but as this is solely for educational purposes, I did not feel the need to obtain this.
Artefact 2 – Recording and Mixing Project
I will use my Recording and mixing project as my first artifact for my graded unit. This piece of work shows my communication skills and ability to work in a team as it was a group project, leading to a combination of all our skills being put on display. My ability to record live sounds with instruments and vocals is shown here also as well as my knowledge of studio equipment such as microphones as I will be recording mono and stereo tracks and amplifiers. As well as this I am also showing my ability to use different placements of mics and such to enhance the sound captured. This project also showcases my abilities to work in a studio setting, including using a mixing desk proficiently and managing the signal path to correctly use all the outputs on the desk and link them to the daw. My ability to work to a tight deadline is shown here as well as my time management skills from organising studio bookings and such to have everything completed in time. My skills for business module is put to use in this project too as I have created a plan and contract for the recording. Lastly my ability to mix and master a track have been put on display as I’ve curated the perfect mix of levels and eq for the tracks, as well as added effects when I deemed necessary such as compression reverb and delay.
Artefact 3 – Own Song
I will use my own project I worked on during the start of the college year for my third artifact. My DAW and Synthesis module helped me with this project a lot as every week we learned new skills within Ableton Live I was creating this song along side it to put all my newfound skills to good use. This project shows my structuring capabilities in putting a track together. This also shows my ability to create unique sounds using samples and synthesis and also arranging them into midi tracks creating melodies. My initiative is shown here because it was my own project with no assistance from anyone, meaning it is a true example of my skills as a producer. I used a variety of audio and midi tracks in this project. The midi channels contain both samples and synths each in their own respective places showing my knowledge on synthesis and sampling which was gained from the daw and midi unit. My organisation skills are put on display again within this project as learned in the sound for multimedia unit, it is extremely handy to organise your tracks to make your workflow faster and of a higher standard. My knowledge of effects and processing are showcased in this song as I’ve got lots of dynamic processing, reverb and EQ all over the track. Lastly my mixing and mastering skills are shown here as I’ve created a clean mix on the track including balancing all the levels to make sure every instrument is heard as intended and there is no signal distortion.
